We already have an lxc prototype here. But it will take one or two years to get really usable.

[Openvz Users] Full integration in the standard kernel

----- "andreas moroder" <andreas.moroder at tin.it> wrote:

is it planed to send to the main kernel developers all the
changes/patches needed to get openvz working with a future standard
kernel ?

Is there are timetable or does it depend from the main kernel
maintainers ?

Here's my understanding of it.

OpenVZ/Parallels has no intention of submitting the OpenVZ patch to mainline. It is too big and mature ... and mainline does not accept massive patches like that.

They have been working with the mainline containers group on container features in the mainline. The group includes a developers from IBM, Google, Parallels/OpenVZ, Linux-VServer and others. The code that Parallels/OpenVZ has contributed is all new code and does not come from OpenVZ.

Container features started being added to the mainline kernel with 2.6.24 and more and more of them have been added with each release sense then.

When will containers be done in the mainline kernel? Depends on what you call done. Different developers have their own specific needs and may call it done at different times... but the general consensus is that it'll take 1-3 years... perhaps longer.
