MMM (Mysql Master-Master Replication) on EC2

MySQL master-slave replication was one of the first architectures used for failovers. The rationale is that if a master fails. a slave can be promoted to master, and start handle the writes. For this you could use several combinations of ip tools and monitoring software, for example, iproute and nagios, or heartbeat and mon.

Amazon's Elastic Computing Cloud (EC2) has always intrigued me. But now that you can get an EC2 instance for around $50 a month it's an amazing deal I couldn't pass up!

One of the perceived downsides of EC2 is that the instances aren't persistent. That's where Chef comes in! Chef is like a little system admin robot... you tell it how you want your system configured and it will do all the dirty work on the server.

Below I describe how to get started with EC2, use Chef to prepare the server for rails apps, and then use Capistrano to start up a sample rails app! It's really pretty easy

Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS)¶

Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) provides block level storage volumes for use with Amazon EC2 instances. Amazon EBS volumes are off-instance storage that persists independently from the life of an instance. Amazon Elastic Block Store provides highly available, highly reliable storage volumes that can be attached to a running Amazon EC2 instance and exposed as a device within the instance. Amazon EBS is particularly suited for applications that require a database, file system, or access to raw block level storage.

Features of Amazon EBS volumes

• Amazon EBS allows you to create storage volumes from 1 GB to 1 TB that can be mounted as devices by Amazon EC2 instances. Multiple volumes can be mounted to the same instance.
• Storage volumes behave like raw, unformatted block devices, with user supplied device names and a block device interface. You can create a file system on top of Amazon EBS volumes, or use them in any other way you would use a block device (like a hard drive).
• Amazon EBS volumes are placed in a specific Availability Zone, and can then be attached to instances also in that same Availability Zone.
• Each storage volume is automatically replicated within the same Availability Zone. This prevents data loss due to failure of any single hardware component.
• Amazon EBS also provides the ability to create point-in-time snapshots of volumes, which are persisted to Amazon S3. These snapshots can be used as the starting point for new Amazon EBS volumes, and protect data for long-term durability. The same snapshot can be used to instantiate as many volumes as you wish.
• AWS also enables you to create new volumes from AWS hosted public data sets.

The last presentation before the break was from Guido Trotter+, who presented the ongoing work on their Ganeti framework for virtual machine management. The system is used internally in *Google and serves as a foundation for hosting virtual instances for employees and projects. Ganeti is based on Xen and KVM,

placing it in the domain of open source tools. One of the strong points of Ganeti is the ability to live migrate between servers in the same cluster.

Concurrent storage is handled by DRBD. An experienced benefit of using virtualization, they explained, is to be able to re-image virtual machines quickly in order to recover from errors instead of hunting down the errors themselves.

Ganeti is a virtual server cluster management software tool built on top of the Xen virtual machine monitor and other Open Source software. After setting it up it will provide you with an automated environment to manage highly available virtual machine instances.

It has been designed to facilitate cluster management of virtual servers and to provide fast and simple recovery after physical failures using commodity hardware.

It will take care of operations such as redundant disk creation and management, operating system installation (in cooperation with OS-specific install scripts), startup, shutdown, failover of instances between physical systems.
